I liked Gravemind myself; sure, taken alone it can be considered a deus ex machina, but as a part of the Halo whole, it is a very important character, as it *is* the Flood, personified, and as we've seen in other media, the development of these creatures is part and parcel of the Flood life cycle.

In my opinion, Gravemind's big reveal is nothing short of the big twist where the Flood go from being one of the two main enemies to being THE enemy. I believe Narc wrote a very good analysis on the importance of the Flood's overall intelligence and the necessity to reveal it on Rampancy.
