okay, i pretty much looked in to it, this is in terms of a nuclear weapons electromagnetic wave. (EMP) which lasts about 1 millisecond. Secondary effects may last for more than a second. The pulse is powerful enough to cause long metal objects (such as cables) to act as antennae and generate high voltages when the pulse passes. These voltages, and the associated high currents, can destroy unshielded electronics and even many wires. There are no known biological effects of EMP. The ionized air also disrupts radio traffic that would normally bounce off the ionosphere.
(copied from wikipedia) NOW! this is what i found about faraday cages AND conductive material protection. Faraday cage: this is a metal cage or structure that the metal comprising it is joined together and grounded, in this way any signals or electromagnetic waves that reach the cage are grounded and effectively disposed off. However if the level of electromagnetic interference is high enough then it can still break through the hardening, or protection of electronics The faraday cage can work on an aircraft or in this case, the spaceship BECAUSE you ground the faraday cage protecting hte objects TO the hull of teh ship itself, effectively letting it dissipate objects, a faraday cage is in fact used commonely IN the aircraft industry in cases of lightning strikes. the second form i found and resaerched was the conductive material. Conductive material: by attaching the conductive material to the hull or airframe you are effectively grounding the electromagnetic interference of unwanted electromagnetic signals. Conductive protection takes the form of braiding. Double protection takes the form of double braiding. By grounding the electromagnetic signals get dissipated across the frame/ or hull. this is basically the same thing, by grounding to the hull etc you dissipate the energy, etc. Both approaches would work, and range is important when talking about how close to the nuclear blast. also factors dependant on whether a faraday cage can be ‘broken though’ by the electromagnetic pulse are dependant on the completeness of the faraday cage, if it’s a mesh or if its totally covering and on the frequency of the pulse. |
