In Response To: Re: Why didn't the Covenant just shoot the MAC's?? (Slith) : To me, it looks like Bungie said "screw logic, let's get some boarding
: In all honesty, the Cairo should have been destroyed by Regret's point
It could have been destroyed by the point defense systems. But why would Regret have bothered? The station was going to blow in moments anyway, so he wouldn't need to waste time and energy on destroying the station. : Bording parties also make absolutely no sense. Since when do the Covenant
When the MAC guns can destroy you own ships instantly and utterly? When you have to defend a Hierarch? The Covenant knows the power of a MAC gun, and they respect it, and they have to defend Regret from attack. Therefore, use of boarding parties to take the MACs offline makes a lot more sense. They don't outnumber the humans three to one in this scenario; in this case, they have to use subtetly and discretion and tactics to take out the guns with minimal loss among their own fleet. : Hell, if each of the boarding craft that reached Cairo were packed with
Not necessarily. How powerful is the armor of such a station? Can you guarantee that the explosives would have destroyed enough of the station to take it out? : Actually, come to think of it, Regret's battlegroup shouldn't have even made
Two of the MACs are taken out before the battle even begins. And you fail to take into account the composition of the Covenant fleet: thirteen cruisers and two assault carriers. these aren't mere Covenant frigates and destroyers, they're cruisers and gigantic carriers. These are the best ships in the Covenant fleet, aganst a force consisting, for the most part, of the smallest and weakest of the UNSC fleet. Thirteen Covenant cruisers is a rough match for 39 UNSC cruisers. When you look at it that way, I personally am surprised that the UNSC fleet did so well. : Let's say each
2320/15 warships equals roughly 154 missiles per ship. Pulse laser point defense systems would cut that by at least a third, probably half, meaning that less than a hundred missiles would strike each ship. That's like throwing spitballs at a freight train; it would take five hundred or more missiles to even briefly drop a Covenant ship of that size's shields. Not to mention that not all frigates may pack MAC cannons, and frigate-mounted MACs are very weak; the Covenant corvette that the Commonwealth took on withstood two MACs, over a hundred and fifty Archers, and a nuke and still didn't die. Fighters and bombers would be met by Seraphs, from both the cruisers and teh assualt carriers, which can carry hundreds of them. Nukes wouldn't be used so close to the stations; the EMP would burn out the MACs' electronics. |
