In Response To: Re: Why didn't the Covenant just shoot the MAC's?? (M6D) : Same, i feel its a logical explanation that explains the problem with other
Well first off, 300 defend earth. Now the problem with building defenses in space is that the defense must cover all dircetions, so right away, 50% of the guns are on the other hemisphere of the planet. -next. MACS have a maxium effective range. because every point on a sphere is equal distance from the center, the cairo group must have been the closest group from the direction that the covenant were attacking. -15 ships charge right at one group. while at first they would only be in range of one groups. as they drew closer they would enter the rages of others, HOWEVER, lets assume that all MACs start pointing directly outward from the planet. Thing of the MACs as a circle of turrents all pointing outwards. now lets say our covenant charge at a perpendicular line to cairo group. While they are staring cairo group down the muzzle the other groups our pointed in the wrong dircetions.
(added note. because the covenant are moving, the other groups would need to get a lead in order to hit them, so not only do the guns have to catch up, but also get ahead of the target that is still continuosly moving out of range.) By the time the other nearest groups are able to open fire, the covenant have already covered alot of ground. By the time the second closest ring of Macs is able to fire, (this ring goes around the first ring, think of a target picture with cairo the center dot) the covenant now just passing cairo. now this may sound like a giant flaw in human defense but wait. it all depended on the covenant. The Covenant 15 strong fly straight at the barrels of cairo group, head on. This makes cairo's targets as small as possible because they are only exposed to the front of the ship vs the wider and easier to hit side. So the covenant charge at full speed torward the MACs. Only cairo group is pointed in the right direction to hit them. because they have the smallest possible targets, they have to aim carefully. (i am going to classify the orbital MACS as equal to regular grade ship MACs and not supermacs, i will addresses why i say so at the end) 3 rounds fire all toward the same ship, 1 misses, the other 2 hit and kill it, covie 14 strong but they are pressing forward nonstop, coming closer every second, (making it take the other groups even longer to get in the right direction.)
Thusly Regret pulled an ender wiggin. with enders last test. Rather than stop and engage any of the enemy with such impossible odds he had ever one he straight for the planet with the plan of only having on make so that it could blow up the planet and kill everyone. but note that in this plan of action, the covenant suffered sever causalities ( who am i kidding, just about every one but regret's ship exploded.) and humanity lost barely any thing execpt two mac guns, out of 300. MACS VS SUPERMACS Why do i propose that earth is not surrounded my superMACs like the ones at reach. Reach was the military building center of humanity. all the best military products, (ships, orbital MACs, spartan super soldiers) came from Reach. I haven't seen the books in a long time but i believe that reach had 15-20 superMACS? now reach is considered earths doorstep right. So what makes more sense, putting a defenses on the enterance, our the object inside. You don't call something a wall and then reinforce the stuff behind it more than the wall. Since Reach is an inner colony, and earths "door step" i suggest that the defense grid of reach is very old and has been well fortified for a long time before the start of the covenant wars. With this in mind, If reach only has 15-20ish SuperMACs, then humanity has put the highest number of possible superMACs ever created on Reach. Reach would have the best avabile defense of its time. So i suggest that SuperMAC require so much power, that only a maxium of 20ish could be put around one planet (unless earth has 15 times more power than Reach)(otherwise reach would have had more since it was a time of war during a superior foe) Remember that a Super MAC was incredibly more advanced than a regular MAC. MACs are massed produced in the mass production of ships where as Reach only has 20ish supermacs. So then what does earth have. In recent events of the fall of Reach and destruction of the inner colonies, Earth must have begun a mass production of Regular orbital mac stations. these stations had to be easy to make in vast amount, require less material, and less power so that more could be supported by one planet. So what do we get, 300 lowgrade mass produced MACs that are cheap but effective. this project was easily started before the fall of reach (in fact it was probiliy finished before the fall of reach) but building a super MAC was probibliy alot of work and material, and earth being the oldest of human planets, would most likely have the least amount of remaining naterial resources.
