Yet, Johnson, in the tram, told the MAster Chief exactly that. Coordinated fire from the Athens and Malta, would bolster the Cairo's own defense. My theory as to what happened was that "boarding craft...a lot of 'em" also latched onto the other two stations and were able to overrun key operational areas sooner than on the Cairo. Both other stations exploded while the Chief had only gotten to the Pelican bays. If the bombs were in the MAC firing room on each station, then the borders had control over both station before Cairo. Note that by the time the Chief made it to Firing Control, the Covenant were just finished setting up shop. They hadn't had time to try to sabotage the MAC gun, even though they were in the perfect position to do so...keep the gun from firing on the Covenant ships at any rate.
