In Response To: Re: Why didn't the Covenant just shoot the MAC's?? (58)
: All I intended by saying that was some people seem to think that the MACs at
: Earth are normal, not "super".
: Anyway, if you take the statistic of Reach--Three hundred-twelve Covenant
: ships, one hundred twenty Human ships, twenty O-MACs, with over 80% of the
: Covenant fleet being decimated, which is an incredible statistic when
: compared to the normal three-to-one ratio required for Humans to do any
: significant damage to the Covenant--then it would take something like ten
: thousand ships to take Earth.
: Three hundred orbital MACs. Let's say that a third of them can come to bear
: on a Covenant fleet at once. Now let's say that for every salvo of one
: hundred O-MACs, 75% of the shots hit. So you have seventy-five Covenant
: ships dead for every salvo, not even taking into account the two-hundred
: or so other Human ships in Earthspace. Now realize that the O-MACs can
: fire once every thirty seconds, you have seventy-five ships dead every
: thirty seconds, with a much longer range than any Covenant ship, even a
: Flagship. Now, add the nuclear mines that we're sure to have, the large
: number of Cruisers, Frigates, and Destroyers, the possibility of Carriers
: and Super Carriers.
: Using the Reach statistic, which was three-to-one Covenant advantage, it
: would take a fleet aproximately two hundred times the size of the one at
: Reach to defeat Earth. That's 62400 Covenant ships. The only reason that
: Regret's fleet managed to get through was that his objective was not to
: disable or destroy the Fleet or the defences, it was to get to Earth no
: matter the cost. Sure, he got Earthside, but to no avail: One of fifteen
: ships made it, and only managed to get one city. The only reason they got
: the city was because he executed a Slipspace Fold within the gravitational
: field of the planet. Otherwise, Amber or -117 would have destroyed his
: ship. A Covenant battlefleet would have the objective of completely
: destroying the Human Fleet and O-MACs, and would not have the success--if
: it can be called that--of Regret, because the different objectives require
: different tactics.
: The arrival of the Forerunner ship change the equation: We have no idea as to
: the firepower of the ship, but if I were guestimating, I would put it
: equal to two or three UNSC Cruisers. The only reason that the O-MACs
: haven't shot down the Forerunner ship is that -117 is onboard, although it
: is entirely possible that the ship could even withstand a round from one
: of the O-MACs.
: The fleet currently engaging Earth would have to be several hundred ships, I
: think, to be able to last any amount of time, which it obviously has, as
: we can see from the state of the Cairo and Human Fleet.
of course there are a few factors that you';ll have to dismiss, the TWO most powerful ships acutally slipped past the MAC, remember, the second carrier itself was taken out by a bomb, but this is of little matter anyway.
Secondly, this still brings up my point, about how if this many stations were in said orbit around Earth, how come only the one cluster, or remanents of, ie, Cairo station could fire on said battle group if the SMAC's or whatever you want to call them's range is so extreme?
