In Response To: Re: Prophet of Truth and the Great Journey (Ragashingo)

: Well Truth did more or less order Regret's death, that cuts Regret's
: political options down a bit doesn't it? Take a look at what happened to
: Regret: 1. Regret either is sent to Earth or goes there on his own looking
: for Forerunner artifacts. Somehow one of the three most powerful leaders
: in the Covenant doesn't know that he's going to the Human's homeworld. We
: know that the Covenant knew where Earth was from First Strike, so how did
: Regret manage to not be told that's where he was going? Perhaps Truth had
: a hand in that?

wait stop backup... The covenant know of the coordinates formly known to use as earth. when cortana read the memory banks of the unwielding elephant. she would immedately reconize those coordinates as earth. that does mean the covenant know its our earth. In fact. i think the only reason they know those coordinates is because it had something to do being the location of something forerunner. When regret went there with his team of explorers, did they not learn the coordinates of delta halo. They went to earth because something else told them earth would know the location of another halo.

But why the big fleet.
Remember when the covenant attacked Sigma Octanus. They came looking for a forerunner artifact, not a fight. which is problily the main true reason why we won that fight. Humanities not better on the ground, the outposts on the planet were demolished. the spartans won the day on the ground, most likly because the covenant weren't planing on humans or a battle. if they were planing on a battle, wouldn't they have brought more elites to command squads?

Well they fixed there starigy with Reach. they learned Reachs location two ways, from the fact that something forerunner was there, and the tracking bug on the ship. sure now that a human presence was there, they sent a large fleet to ensure that there wasn't a repeat of sigma. while almost successful. Humanity still got away with the forerunner artifact. So want does the covenant do now. up the size of the fleet for the next time. (called learning from mistakes)

instead of risking running into another human planet and having forerunner information leaked into human hands (exspecially info like the location of the next halo) they were prepared with an extra huge fleet. why so big? so that they could properly defend space and win any ground battles and ensure the forerunner info was secured. However the destruction of the elephant put a major delay in plans. the fleet whose purpose was defense an victiory just incase was destoried. However, Regret, not wanting to wait for a another fleet of that size to amass again (whose sole purpose was for only "if there were humans") regret instead decided that the wait for a new fleet was not worth of learning the location of the next halo, despite the only "possible human presence". So regret made the decision to go without a giant fleet. a decision, he would no doubt Regret.

: 2. Regret apparently finds something on Earth that leads him to Delta Halo,
: once there he is chased by the Humans (including a Demon, who the Covenant
: thought all died on Reach based on comments in The Flood). Regret is
: planning on activating the Halo.

to make amends for his big time screw up, if only he didn't gamble the possibily of there not being a human presence.

: Side note: I think this is important. Most likely the activation of the Halo
: was something to be done with ceremony, with the council there to watch
: and so on, not by one Prophet on his own.

side side note: "Stay where you are! Nothing can be done until my sermon is complete!" sermon, ceremony, close enough. Plus, did high charity not arrive at delta halo as soon as possible. we had only been there for less than a half day(less). while waiting for high charity, were teams not sent to the liberay, and regret at the time was not activating halo or even anywhere near the control room. he instead went to the holyiest looking temple to begin a celebration of the greatest day in all of covenant history. Time like these call for rejoicing and celebration (do we not celebrate baby showers before the baby is born)

: 3. High Charity, a huge Covenant fleet, and Truth arrive, though they might
: have been too late to prevent Regret's death. Very oddly Truth orders the
: Elite's Phantoms to turn around, thus sealing Regret's fate. Sure maybe
: that was just a play to get the Elites out of power, except the entire
: temple including Regret is Energy Projection Beemed to death. So much for
: not firing upon Forerunner stuff...

first off, half jaw calmed "his murder was within our graps, if you had not withdraw our phantoms". meaning regrets already dead at this time, but that his ships were in a position to hunt down the murder and capture him for torture. But by not letting him hunt down chief, the murder could still be out there. then half jaw states "No holy one, i only wish to express my concern that the brutes..." which show two things. one that blaming the honor guards of regret for regrets death is not a good reason for changing all guards. and second that he has concern for the prophets IE concern of the murder coming back for more and that changing the guard is unwise in a way. he doesn't express that, but you can tell he is thinking it.

If the elites had been allowed to redem them selves by capturing MC and having him tortured, then the turn over plan of brutes and elites might not of worked as well.

If they captured chief, chances are he would be extremely tortured (even worse than arbiter was perhaps) so as to make an example. however, by vaporizing the cheif, the example making would never get to be made, thusly allowing truth to make an example out of someone else. like o say the elites.

Also, regret was already dead before the energy beam came down. or prosumed dead considering he not there to say don't shoot. you think any covies would follow the order shoot upon your hiearch, (even if coming from another hiearch, the hiearchs can't just tell covies to do anything, like say maybe "give up your believe in the great journey" nope i don't truth could get away with giving that order.)

: Anyway, a lot of bad things happened to Regret, and at least one and maybe
: more of those bad things were ordered by Truth. I think Truth had Regret
: killed, possibly for political reasons (maybe Regret was suspecting
: something), and/or possibly for Regret's past failures (maybe Regret was
: the one responsible for losing the Covenant station in First Strike),
: and/or possibly because setting off the Halo would have totally mucked up
: Truth's plan, whatever it is.

i like the better idea of past screw ups, although not the covenant station example. but having the name regret suggest you have done a ton of regretable things before.(aka mistakes, goof ups, or just simplely very hard regretable decisions like orders that would case the death of many but had to be made because it was the right thing.)

I think his biggest failure, is as i said before, repeating the failures of the past with Reach and Sigma. this time he has lead humanity to the second halo, anyone remember want happened the last time humans were brought to a halo (give you hint, "BOOM") the loss of the first halo raked or hearts with grief, imaige if a repeated mistake (not an orignal one) lead to the destruction of the second halo. yeah, the covenant would be pissed, but this time at regret and not humanity.

: Later on we have the last person close to Truth's political power is left to
: die when saving him was a light squeeze away. Time might have been a
: factor in Truth's mind, not wanting to be blasted by the Halo, but time
: was not a factor in the end. Cortana kept the Forerunner ship from leaving
: for several minutes, far longer than it would have taken to pop the
: floodling, and sit Mercy back into his chair.

prove saving him was a light squeeze away, remember your dealing with a flood infection here. riping it off kills him. leaving it on turns him flood.
The flood had a link to mercys lifeforce, if it die, he died. those kind of stituation are not as easy as poking it with a pin, it would require seroius attention. and experimental ideas of getting it off. (Come on its parisite history, all the great parasites entertainment history are no easy problem, the Alien facehugger, the wrath bug from stargate altantis, astroid spiders from the outer limit. Even common leeches and ticks put up a hell of a fight. If removing the flood were easy or simple, the species would be a failure as a parasite, come one.) the great journey is about to start, we don't have any time to deal with your crisis, saving truth would require too much attention, whether your agenda was my great journey plan, or your conspircy plan.

: I think Mercy's death was not planned, but was simply a convenient occurrence
: that Truth seized to eliminate someone that he would have had to share
: power with. Yes, I have no answer to how you do or don't share power after
: wiping the galaxy clean of life, but there you go.

Or an answer as to why start a rebelion if you are going to kill everyone, they would have all blindly let halo kill them. so why stir up trouble that would create an enemy that would try to stop you.

Also remember that thing i said about the extent of what the prophets can order.

lets go over a brief list of obiviuos ones
-order the destruction of halo
-order you to give up your faith and stop believing the great journey
-appartly braking scared traditions like who is the honor guard is one.

-ordering the death of another prophet of equal or higher rank.
you can;t just tell them to kill somebody as religios and powerful as you. when you accuse another leader who is just as strong in faith as desriving to die for the sake of something religios, the guys will just look at you blankly and say, how could it be better for someone as religious as mercy to get killed. how does killing a top religios leader help the religion.

Since truth is short on time, rather than taking time to help mercy with his stituation, they would leave him there in hopes that someone else will find him and take care of it. that other someone supposed to be a covie. while in flight in the phantom, truth could easy be telling someone mercys position so that they could take care of it. but the great journey is priority, it waits for no one.
