In Response To: ...and this time none of you will be left behind (Wado SG) Here is an old post of mine regarding the same issues about "100,000 Years War": I think we all agree that the Forerunners struggled with the Flood for a long time. I doubt however, that they could fight the Flood for a "100,000 years", as you can see how quickly the Flood can decimate any opponent: Forerunner machinery, Covenant, Humans, or even all 3 combined, as seen in Halo 2. You also see how quickly the Flood can alter the atmosphere of High Charity (several hours at most?). The Flood could not have fought Sentinels for 100,000 years on Delta Halo because there is no food source until Regret's arrival. All the Flood could do is lay dormant until suitable hosts arrive. We know the Halos were built several hundred to several thousand years after the Flood were first encountered on the Gas Mining Facility. I would assume the Halos were activated shortly after they were completed, allowing for no more than several hundred years leeway. GS343 was left in charge exactly 101,217 years ago, which either means the Halos were activated at that time, or a Reclaimer came at some time shortly later to activate them. I've shown you in an earlier theory thread that GS343 describes the first activation in two different ways. In Halo 1, he infers Reclaimers (Humans) fired the first Halo. In Halo 2, he directly states that My Creators/Forerunners fired the first Halo. A little over 100,000 years after the Halos were fired, Humans/Covenant encounter the Flood and continue the war the Forerunners brought to a stalemate through activation. "100,000 years war" is similar to the British-French war called "The Hundred Years' War". It did not mean they fought continuously for 100 years, it means there was never a formal ending of hostilities and each battle which was fought years or decades apart was part of the overall 100 Years War. The Korean war is in a similar state - there was never a formal ending of hostilities, just a simple ceasefire/stalemate. In the Halo universe, this could mean 2 things. It could be as simple as what I mentioned earlier: that Humans/Covenant encountering the Flood 100,000 years after the Forerunners fought them to a stalemate has reignited this war. The second possibility is for the people who believe Humans=Forerunners, or at least have some special relation to them. This second possibility is strengthened by the 100 Years War reference, which revolves around the two *specific* warring parties: British versus French. Because these Reclaimers/Forerunners originally fought the Flood for hundreds/thousands of years, and activated the Halos even though they knew all it would do is cause a truce/stalemate, "100,000 years war" is actually a reference to the two *specific* warring parties that had fought previously: Reclaimers/Forerunners versus the Flood. This makes the most sense because everything in the games and novels imply a special bond between the Human species and the mysterious Forerunners | |
