In reference to last part of Michael's news item on the HSP ( http://halosm.bungie.org/story/newssearch.html?newsitem=790 )... So, Covenant religion just a cover for the Prophets to hunt down the remnants of humanity that survived the rings' activation? How do the Flood fit into this? Speculate/shoot down away. The sub-title "100 000 Year's War" does appear in one of the levels in Halo 2. The last time Halo's weapons were activated was just over 100,000 local (to Halo) years ago. This does seem too strong a coincidence to just ignore they may be related. I believe that Michael is correct in saying that the Prophets have a "grudge" against humanity. However, I don't think he quite put the motives together or the sequence of events. The Prophets did not activate (at least knowingly) the last firing of Halo. I am confident of this because Prophets are not reclaimers, nor are any of the other Covenant species. Only humans appear as reclaimers. Only humans can activate Halo. Another point is that 100,000 year war implies that the war has been going on for a long time, but more literally that the war started 100,000 years ago. I believe this to strongly imply that the war started with the last firing of Halo. Based on this, I conclude that humans activated Halo around 100,000 local years ago, took the ark with whatever else was to be saved and left everything else behind, including the Prophets. This started the 100,000 year war and is the motive behind the contempt for humans demonstrated by the Prophets. As a personal note, I do not believe that humans are the Forerunners, the Forerunners are gone or sleeping. However, humans may have been created or heavily influenced by the Forerunners. I say this because of Biblical references of spirits that existed before man, however, Adam (man) was created in the image of God. Satan was jealous of man, Satan refused to bow down to Adam as his superior. Perhaps some similar story elements fall into the Halo Bible (why call it a Bible, by the way, unless you want to relate it to the Bible). The Prophets and other races could have existed, but somehow humans were created or rose to become the favorites to the Forerunner. The Prophets could have refused to bow down to the humans as their superiors (just like Satan and his followers did in the Bible). Then when the Flood outbreak came to "cleanse the galaxy", the humans were chosen to ride on the Ark. Humans were the only ones worthy enough in the eyes of the Forerunner to do so. The rest of the galaxy was left to rot, but somehow pockets of Prophets and other races survived, maybe blasted back effectively to the Stone Age, but survive they did, and remember they did. They somehow recorded what happened and remembered that they were left behind. The Prophets only want what they feel is rightfully theirs.
