In Response To: Re: Pelican Flights (M6D) : yeah, and think about it, a pelican can lift 66 tones of tank, why not 15 men
You have to consider weight distribution, lifting power, and available space. The forward VTOL engines are smaller than the rear allowing a much heavier load (Scorpion for example) to be lifted between them, wereas the personnel transport area is mostly supported between the front engines which aren't built to lift that kind of weight. Also, the personnel area is hardly larger than the back of a pickup. You can only fit so many people in that small of an area. I must also note that the average modern day infantry carries around 40-60 lbs of equipment. So figure an average weight of 180 per marine + 50 lbs of equipment. Thats 230 lbs per Marine. 230 lbs x 15 Marines = 3,450, lbs. Thats 1 and a half tons worth of weight, not including the pilots and mounted weapons that are centered on the front engines. It adds up pretty fast! I do believe the weapons/ammo pods are carried in the vehicle bay. I've watched the Pelican drop them before and that is where they are held at in a rack built to hold six. I don't think they can carry a vehicle along with the pods. Perhaps the gunship carries the vehicle, and his wingman carries the infantry and pods. |
