In Response To: Gravemind's final Riddle ****Spoilers***** (GryphonOsiris)

Silence fills the empty grave now that I am gone,
But my mind is not at rest, for questions linger on.
I will ask and you will answer.

: Besides being a lovely iambic pentameter (why is it all really evil villians
: are fluent in Shakespeare?), there are very subtle references that explain
: a few question that people have had. In the first verse he says that the
: grave he was in is silent since he is no longer there. Now we can take
: that as the grave being his dwelling on Delta Halo, and the silence being
: the lack of Gravemind's thoughts there (after all potentially millions of
: minds converging as one would be noisy). If you also take that with the
: background we were seeing (High Charity) the most logical assumption would
: be that Gravemind move himself to High Charity. Verse 2, Gravemind, like
: 343 Guilty Spark, has been out of touch with Events since the Halo's fired
: (would really kill the local distribution of the Sunday Times, plus no
: Funny papers for 100,000 years, no wonder he is so Grave.) So of course
: he, like the looney, blue eye Basketball, want to catch up, find out if
: the Mets have won, and if Disco really did die. On a serious note though,
: the fact that he is troubled is a bit worrying. He has absorbed the minds
: of Human's and Covenant alike, so he knows what they know, however perhaps
: it is that which bothers him.

Empty grave might refer to a resurrection. You cannot raise from the dead unless someone believes you are dead. Again a possible multiple meanings here. Gravemind could have been believed dead, and he could have been resurrected from the biomass of all the infected. This goes along with 343 Guilty Sparks comments in Halo, where he is glad to see some of them survived to reproduce. Some of what? What was believed to be dead, but now is alive? It could be the Flood 343 Guilty Spark referred to.

Another meaning could be that empty grave refers to the Forerunner. Silence is not the simple lack of sound. Silence is the lack of hearing sounds, a sort of emptiness as if something was supposed to be there but isn't. This silence could be a reference to missing Forerunners. Was Delta Halo to be the grave, the tomb of the Forerunner? The last resting place, like the pyramids and burial mounds were to Earthman thousands of years ago. Where are the Forerunner graves? Why are they not on Halo? And I don't mean their physical bodies, I mean their tombs. The last testiments of a dieing race.

: He might recognize one of the species and can't understand why they have such
: seemingly primative equipment and do not know the true purpose of Halo and
: the Flood. Now we all are pretty sure that the Covies weapons are bad
: knock offs of the Forerunner weapons, as we have seen with the Sentinel's
: beam cannons. Those he would have some recognition of, though it would be
: like comparing a Matchlock to a P-90. The human projectile weapons would
: be troubling as the forerunners had moved past metal slug weapons long
: before they met the Flood. This is all heading towards him recognizing
: humans, and maybe even more so, Master Chief's armor as being the
: Forerunners.(Side note, obviously Forerunner's didn't call themselves
: that, as it implies that they knew they came first, that they would fall,
: and that others would follow them).

Gravemind cannot ask the Forerunner for they are gone. He has gathered informatin from humans, Covenant, including a prophet, and 2401 the monitor of Delta Halo. These lingering questions bother him, seemingly much more than simple curiousity. What questions could lead to such internal conflict as to become a priority to one such as Gravemind. I do not know, but one possibility is the concept of sacrificing yourself in the hopes to stop the inevitable.

You see it is possible that Gravemind does not understand why the Forerunners did what they did. It is not something he can understand given the nature of his being. Humans may hold the key in that we might think or have the ability to think like the Forerunners. In our humble ways, we might have answers unknown to the immortals.

: Just a Rampant thought on a three verse musing of the greatest threat to life
: since plaid polyester pants.

Very nice thoughts anyhow. :)
