I came up with this idea because of the 'I'd like to buy a vowel, Pat..' thread, but I thought it was interesting enough to warrant its own thread:
What we've got so far: _CCTGLW -- absolute nonsense; perhaps performing a Caesar-like encryption might clear it up.
The Caesar code -- named after the emperor -- involved rotating the individual letters of the message forward or backward n letters; in Caesar's case, it was forward 3. The most common example of this sort of thing nowadays is the ROT-13 'code' commonly found in Usenet messages.
ROT-13ing _CCTGLW produces gibberish, as do many of the other combinations. However, ROT-16ing _CCTGLW seems to make sense.
It produces _RRIVAL, which clearly must be ARRIVAL -- and that just happens to be the name of the first level in Marathon. Although this might be (and with my luck, probably is...) a coincidence, this would make the first glyph an L. Just how, I haven't a clue, yet...
