: The whole thing's available as open source now, so why wouldn't it be? I
: imagine that as long as you included a GPL notice in the package, it'd be
: kosher.
: Actually, probably the best thing to do would be to send the modified files
: to the dev team, so that they could incorporate the fixes into the
: official distribution, and then everyone could enjoy them. This is
: open-source software, after all.
Well, actually they'd hardly need my help to do that. Editing the level attributes to allow for coop starts on all levels in all three official scenarios would probably take only five minutes.
I think the problem with including that in the default package is that it isn't what Bungie and Double Aught intended, and may not play the way people expect.
A custom "made for coop" distribution that includes the modified levels and irons' script might be a good idea-- either alongside the official distributions, or just something I'd host myself, if that is OK with the team.
I realize that given the current licensing, I'd probably be within my rights to distribute anyway, but given the debt I feel myself and the rest of the community owes to the Aleph One team for maintaining and improving the game, I don't see any point in antagonizing them if they'd prefer I not "fork" the game with these fairly trivial alterations. However, if they're OK with it, I will definitely put something up.
