In Response To: Re: And as a brief followup... (Little Kago) : it is utterly absurd to compare the mod scenes of games that are,
Valid point... Doom 3 and HL2 are relatively new games. But I didn't mean to compare 10+ years of Marathon mods to 6 months worth of Doom 3 mods. I was commenting more on the scenes than the collective output. Time could very well prove me wrong on this (and I hope it does). : (and i don't even count halo in this. suffice it to say it "didn't catch
Why not count it? That "bunch of reasons" is exactly what Jorge and I were frousing about. in my opinion pretty much every major FPS suffers from most of those same reasons. Granted HaloCE compounds them... the fact that HaloCE mods can only run on HaloCE doesn't help, and IIRC there is no facility for building solo content. : and it is not the complexity of the tools, it's the games themselves. these
: for example, hl2 deathmatch had over 250+ maps released for it within a few
: the point is that while the tools are easier to use than they ever have been
Again, this is pretty much my point. Porting a low-poly multiplayer map from a previous-generation game isn't the same as creating a good map that exploits the capabilities of the new engine. It IS harder to live up to the standards of the new games. The bar has been raised, and mod teams have a harder time reaching it. : again - what you expect after such a short period of time is beyond me. give
Forgot about Garry's HL... that is some pretty ingenious stuff! but I stand by what I said: the complexity of the tools, the need for more and better art assets, the reliance on scripting, AI, and physics, make mod making a much more difficult and time-consuming task. That's all I'm sayin'. More fuel for the flames: Ian made Red all by himself. A billion levels, a ton of new textures, sounds, physics models, terminals, terminal art, replacement sprites, the works. There's no way on earth that one man could make a comparable mod for any newer game. It just involves too much work and too many highly specialized skills in my opinion. |
