Why would you use the Halo engine though? There are others which are better, I think, and more easily modifiable... the Unreal engine is probably one of the easiest to work on and hack. (Not to mention that the next gen Unreal engine, v3, is truly going to be magnificent.)
I have to completely agree with Forrest regarding Aleph. Particle systems, etc. etc. etc. these are all things that people throw out there because they have now been implemented in newer games, etc. Let's face it, the Marathon engine is not even remotely designed for these things, nor do I think they are necessary. When I fire up Aleph it's because I want to experience that time and place and feel. If I want particle systems, and all that other stuff, I'll fire up my copy of UT2004. In addition, what good would all this new stuff do for us if none of the scenarios, etc. were rewritten to take advantage of it?
