In Response To: I guess I wouldn't turn down money, especially.... (decibel) : if it is being thrown, I mean offered to me. I fix computer problems for
We've had this discussion before - but it's probably worth explaining my point of view again, in this thread. When you accept money for a job you've just finished, you're getting paid for a product. (Your work.) I have no problem with this - hell, I do it every day. :) When you accept money for the maintenance of a website, you're agreeing to an implicit contract - you're agreeing to CONTINUE maintaining that website. You're not being paid for the job you did today, or yesterday, or last week - you're being paid in anticipation of the job you'll be doing NEXT MONTH. (If you don't agree with this tell me how you'd feel if you sent me $20 today, and I shut the website down tomorrow. If your answer does not include 'ripped off', you're lying.) If I do not accept any money for the maintenance of this website, there's one less piece of crushing guilt on my head if something happens and I have to stop running it. (There are plenty of existing, implied contracts here, having nothing whatsoever to do with money, that I'd be breaking by leaving, and there would certainly be people angry at me - but I wouldn't have taken their money, at least.) I'm not planning to walk away tomorrow. (I've been doing this - running Bungie fansites - since May, 1995, with a short break in 97-98 - it's a pretty big part of my life by this point. :) ) But the ability to do so without owing anyone anything (ignore my own guilt here) is pretty frickin' important to my sanity. Hope that helps explain my reasoning. (Might not make you UNDERSTAND it - lots of people tell me I'm crazy for thinking this way - but there it is.) |
