I thought a little more about this. I don't think the flood lets it's host eat. In "Halo:The Flood", when the Marines Officer (Murphy was it?) offered a water bottle to the captive flood-infected marine he just went nuts and tried to attack. This makes me think the overwhelming instinct of the flood is "infect, move, kill, spread and never worry about the host dying because I'll just hitch another ride".

Also, the infected host would need the food that it normally ate (e.g. an infected marine needs human foodstuffs) so it can't mean that the biomass/sentient being thing is flood food in that sense.

What do you think?
