Flood Food

Do the flood actually eat? So far as I can see the flood seem to infest a host, take over it’s body and make it run around and fight and such like, but they don’t actually eat. The generally accepted opinion is that the biomass/sentient criteria for “flood food” means that humans and covenant are food, and that Halo is designed to destroy the food, but is it food like we use food (i.e. nourishment) or is it more like providing vehicles for the flood to move around? By vehicle I mean a body with legs to walk on and hands to manipulate tools, weapons, ships etc. If this is true, then how long does a body remain useful to a flood? I would expect that the useful life of an infected body would be limited (surely it decays, or starves to death when deprived of whatever it would normally eat, or the muscles waste away, even when animated by the flood?) so the infection form has to jump ship into another body after a time. With lots of bodies around a flood could get into one, drive it until it runs out of gas, so to speak, and jump into another, and so on, gradually spreading from its point of origin. Maybe we never see this happen because MC and the covenant do a pretty good job of killing Flood before they reach their expiry date? So what about firing the Halo? Firing the Halo is designed not to starve the flood to death but merely to contain it by burning a “firebreak” around the outbreak to deprive the flood of any new “transport” bodies with which to move on. The flood survive, but they are pretty much grounded through lack of mobility. If the Forerunner now lived far enough away, they could be sure that the firebreak was wide enough to prevent flood ever reaching them, should they ever escape their prison. Questions in summary are: 1. Do flood actually eat? 2. Are flood food just transport or tools for flood to manipulate their environment? 3. How long can an infected host remain useful? 4. Are the other Halo’s arranged around a galaxy known to harbour the flood in order to burn the firebreak if needed?
