I'd guess that a,b,c,d are groups of map in chapters (like Moo: Rage, Despair, Envy, etc.) Let's see... assuming the numbered maps are in order:

"Landing on Halo"
a10.map - The Pillar of Autumn
a30.map - Halo
a50.map - Truth and Reconciliation

"Looking for the Car Keys"
b30.map - The Silent Cartographer
b40.map - Assault on the Control Room

"That Darned 343GS"
c10.map - 343 Guilty Spark
c20.map - The Library
c40.map - Two Betrayals

"Getting the Hell Away"
d20.map - Keyes
d40.map - The Maw

... makes sense to me...

That leaves the rest of the multiplayer maps:

beavercreek.map - Battle Creek
bloodgulch.map - Blood Gulch
boardingaction.map - Boarding Action
carousel.map - Derelict
chillout.map - Chill out
damnation.map - Damnation
hangemhigh.map - Hang 'em High
longest.map - Longest
prisoner.map - Prisoner
putput.map - Chiron TL-34
ratrace.map - Rat Race
sidewinder.map - Sidewinder
ui.map - "Main Menu"
wizard.map - Wizard

Note the Main Menu is a map! Hey I want to play on that one!
