...The Forerunner then realising that there race was doomed they seeded Humans with their genetics. As human kind was not "sentient" at that time, Halo's weapon did not harm them. The Forerunner as a separate species died off, at the hands of their own superweapon, leaving Humans to continue to evolve over the next 100 millennia, and then take their place as the desendants.

...I suppose u can complete saying that Covenants appeared a bit after, otherwise they would have been doomed too.

It seems a really good theory to me.
