A: While Halo would eradicate most of their race, the Forerunners themselves would remain living... by staying ON Halo! Halo acts as a sort of "Noah's Ark", preserving samples of life to reseed the galaxy after the total elimination. GS does say how grateful he is that "some of them survived to reproduce", and I don't think he was talking about the Flood there. :-) What i think: I don't think the forerummer would haev stayed on halo. i think they sacrificed themselves to get rid of the flood. maybe some of them stayed on halo to study the flood. I think that when GS said "some of them survived to reproduce" i think he was talking about the flood. They just took a sew of tehm and put them in a room and made them mate in there to study.
