In Response To: Re: why WOULDN'T Halo 2 xbox be bungie's next proj (Lucid) : A. They only stand to make more on XBox than PC because THEY WORK FOR THE
This isn't the case at all. From a purely financial standpoint, consoles have a much larger market than PC and Mac games, and even if Bungie was still an independent making Halo for the XBox, they would make more from that than they would from the PC version. But it's not that open and shut. Developing for a console is just cool, because you get to spend more time working on the game instead of supporting the zillions of hardware and software configurations on the market. This is the problem lots of developers are having with the PC market... which is the last game you can remember which was so stable and playable at version 1.0 that nobody ever saw any need to patch it? HardCore is right about this one. The PC industry is getting worse, not better. There are no trends that I can think of that suggest it will be easier or more profitable for developers to develop for the PC than a console like the XBox. : B. Sounds absolute. I know nothing about developing games, but I do know that
Of course they both have positives and negatives, but if the positives of developing for a console outweigh the negatives and outweigh the positives of developing for a PC, then it's still easier. And just from my standpoint on the sidelines of the actual engine development process, I would have to say that developing for the XBox is as easy as developing for a PC with a certain hardware configuration, but you don't have to worry about all of the other configurations. Which suggests that XBox development is on par with PC development at it's absolute best. So I think HardCore is right again here. : C. Bungie can develop for PC/Mac if they choose. Why not? Nobody said that they couldn't. : D. PC games are just as "visable" as console games, just visible to
If you look at the sales figures, PC games generally rake in an order of magnitude fewer sales. Certainly, good PC games do get exposure, but compared to console titles and their much larger audience, it's not nearly as much. : E. Bungie saw their ideas come to life on PC and Mac, too. See B again. PC
Meh, HardCore was being a bit melodramatic about "ideas coming to life" only on the XBox. But he's right about the development advantages, as I pointed out earlier. And actually, developing games on the XBox and releasing games on the PC/Mac ARE mutually exclusive activities. Bungie does not have unlimited talent resources, and development on either platform is sufficiently different that we probably wouldn't want to do both simultaneously. So you do one, and then you do the other. Cheers,
