Only because it was a Macintosh-only game. Everyone who owned a Mac and was interested in games had a copy of Marathon. I personally think it was in many respects a better game than Halo (for its time), leaving Halo with only the title of best FPS since Marathon. Halo does the best job of any game since Marathon of recreating the creepy atmosphere and sensation of "you are not the biggest, baddest thing out there, but you might be the smartest". And, the recharger is a nice way of promoting guerilla tactics without the slowness of having to go back to rechargers all the time. But, the sheer linearity of it is something of a disappointment. I really missed not having to do any exploring at all. It seems like at nearly all points in Halo, I only have one way to go... And, don't forget the Myth series, which did receive Game of the Year acclaim from some sources, if my memory serves me. | |
