You're right, there are plenty of progressive games out there now. I haven't played Left for Dead. I have played both Portals and I thought there was nothing objectionable about how Chel was treated as a character. I always play as FemShep and think they might have been better off with only a female protagonist, even though it would've shot the player customization aspect. BroShep is a tool. I can't stand him. I find FemShep to be more of a badass, not because she's a beautiful woman with guns, but because she feels way more authentic. Better facial expressions, better voice acting (Jennifer HALE! What-what!), better presence in the room. Having Cortana be a naked blue lady is just laying her open to danger and plays perfectly into the male "damsel in distress" fantasy. I don't see the appeal and I can see how plenty of folks would find that creepy/icky/what have you. Look, I'm offended by inequality wherever I see it. I happen to be in situations often where I get mistreated or people I care about get mistreated because we're of a rather small demographic. I get shit for not being Christian. My parents get shit for being lesbians. My deadbeat geriatric neighbors filed a bogus complaint with my mom's work to try to get her fired, because they're homophobic fucks and just decided one day that they'd prefer us destitute so they wouldn't have to stand living nextdoor to us anymore. I was raised to treat everybody the same. No hyper-feminist, men-are-douches attitude. Just. The damn. Same. I have not yet begun to fight and I'd rather not start, not here, because I have enough shit IRL to deal with that I'll start getting ulcers if I commit myself to online squabbles. This level of ire is the one I was trying to hold back when I wrote my previous post. Now that you've seen it, are you satisfied that I'm for the cause of justice? I hate when this happens, now I sound all self-righteous and shit. Where the fuck is my vodka..... P.S. A big shoutout to Leisandir for backing me up. You rock, my friend.
