There are more values to art than pleasure. Most of the dead painters who are now famous created art that was considered bad by their contemporaries. Their paintings weren't pleasing to look at. Now, we generally acknowledge that there is greater value to a painting than how nice it looks. Does it strike an emotion? Does it make you uncomfortable? Do you register its existence at all? These are all valid and valuable reactions. Fun and videogames have the same relationship. It's a useful device, but not every moment of a game needs to be fun to be engaging. If I'm interested for other reasons than "wow, I really enjoy shooting rockets at those aliens," that's fine. : To me treating them as 'just games' is the way we get better games. That's such a limiting philosophy. It's just as bad as "it's just an action movie, why are you complaining about the story?" A film with a strong narrative and cool action sequences is a better film. Baseball isn't fun because it's a game, it's fun because it's an experience. So many more people enjoy baseball than play it. Yes, a backyard game is plenty fun, but on the professional level, the players are at a job and the audience is invested in a narrative beyond the game itself. Will my team win? Will we beat our rivals? Will the mascot be entertaining? Will there be a fistfight? How will this affect my fantasy team? If you strip all that away, all you have is twenty guys maybe enjoying a few hours of play. Let me tell you something - I don't like baseball. I don't like most sports. I don't like most boardgames. The reason for this is that all they are is a set of rules. I know your argument, that that's all a game is, we've had this out a few times before, but here it is: I don't care which team wins or loses if the rules are the only thing I have to care about. I think I'm rambling a bit here, but: art doesn't have to be pleasant to be valuable.
