I believe it is so widely used BECAUSE it allows you to see the battlefield in ways that others can't. If you are about to turn a corner, you know exactly where the guy on the other team will be. You could effectively start shooting before you knew where he would be if you didn't have Promethean Vision.

While radar gives you an approximate location, you don't know if the other player is jumping, crouching, what weapon he has... a lot of info that could turn the tides in his favor if you didn't know. If you were in a situation in which a guy on the other team had a rocket launcher around the corner from you and his plan was to jump around the corner to get a good angle on you and kill you. If you use Promethean vision, you would know that he had the rocket launcher and would be able to back off. Also, as soon as you saw him jump you would be able to start shooting him ahead of time and possible jump as well to avoid the blast.

So that is one of the main reasons people use it so often right now. It can be used long distances and it allows you to put shots on someone before you would have even seen them otherwise, thus giving you the advantage.
