More creative control, less need for : Hollywood bullcrap... This is off topic, but you are absolutely so far off base regarding creative control, I don't even know where to begin. For starters, unless you completely fund the work yourself and control all aspects of the distribution and marketing, you do not have complete creative control. If you think distributors do not make changes to independent films, then you are dead wrong. Distributors often require cuts for content in order to make a rating, cuts for content because they don't like the content, or cuts for time if they want to be able to show more screenings per day. If you do not think that Microsoft isn't approving content in this web series, then you are pretty delusional, especially when it's a marketing tool rather than a bona fide work in and of itself. I guarantee you whoever is making this does not have final cut. Secondly, large studios very often give creative control to talented artists, because there really truly are few of them. Most if not all of the "Hollywood Bullcrap" you speak of takes place on films where there is no expectation of artistic excellence in the first place. I will remind everybody that Warner Brothers started freaking out when nobody could understand Bane in the Dark Knight Rises prologue, and so asked Nolan to unmuffle Bane's dialogue. Nolan basically said no, and that was that. It's certainly within their power to force him to do it, but they aren't because he doesn't think it's necessary artistically. It certainly still happens, but in this day and age such a thing is far rarer when actual artistry is involved, in part because making good movies is HARD, and so the less you interfere with truly good filmmakers the better. Truth be told it's probably worse for independent films, since the director / writer / whatever isn't a name and hasn't been proven yet, so the profit motive is near the top. The fact that this is a web series has absolutely no bearing on the amount of creative control left to the film makers. Keep in mind I know none of the details of this production or the arrangements, but there's not much chance it will be dramatically different than everything else.
