The Chief was completely in the dark as to whether they were hostile to him or not prior to them displaying hostility towards him; so, I felt just like he did in the moment: "What are these things? Are they helping me against the Covenant troops here? Are they like the sentinels from the rings where they're not hostile unless commanded to be so? What am I dealing with here? What are these things?"

I'm not saying that these literal worded-thoughts were going through his head, but I think that's what he was feeling at the time, and once the Crawler gave away the fact that it was hostile,he properly identified it as such, which is useful to the player who has no idea what to expect and wonders why the cool little creature just started attacking him for no reason.

That's what I got from it, anyway.
