The best, and only marketing one should trust is word of mouth. I did not stumble upon Bungie and become a lifelong fan because of an ad campaign. I did it because a friend told me Marathon was awesome. It was. Think about it. If a game is phenomenal, people are going to be talking about it in person and on the internet. You don't even need to listen to marketing, because people you trust and whose tastes you share are all telling you it's good. You only need to listen to marketing if there's no buzz. But why would there be no or poor word of mouth? Maybe because it's terrible. In that case, the marketers are trying to trick you. It is never ever in your best interest to listen to advertising.
