Contrary to popular belief, Matchmaking cannot and will not solve all ills. Online, you cannot ensure that new players won't go up against experienced players: day 1 you have basically no information. New gamertags, new playlists. Moments of low population or in sparsely populated areas. If you mean beginning by matching new players at the lower end of the skill spectrum (a la Halo 3) then that's no good. You can get good at the game without ever entering MM - in campaign, in customs. And you have to grind out games to show that even though you're new to MM, you're not a bad player. Always having to play against people's who's skills are greatly in excess of your own when you're a known low-skill player is a horrible experience as well, even if you have managed to learn where the weapons are. It is more sound to match new players closer to the middle of the skill spectrum so the maximum possible skill difference is less. Of course, because of the knowledge gap, new players often still lose a lot to more experienced, but equally skilled players. BTW, it's 'TrueSkill.'
