: PC is a location, not a device. The location defines the input method. The
: input method defines the utility, the audience and the ease of experience.
: Ultimately there's no difference between a PC and a console at the 10,000
: foot level, but the locations are wildly different.

: If you like adding $400
: graphics cards to your PC every two years, go nuts. If someone else would
: rather play Sonic in their underwear, who are we to judge?

Yes to part A, part B (cost) not so much in my case.

I'm an IT guy so of course I've had my PC as the center of my entertainment area before, but things have changed in the last few years. If I watch a movie, play a game, watch TV or surf the web on my PC, its just MY experience, I can't really share that with others. Yes, I could purchase an even bigger monitor, and yes, I can play online with people but the PC is not exactly in a communal area. For me it never has been. It's been a private experience (with the exception of online play).

Since consoles have been catching up, things have changed. I find myself playing and watching with roommates more, and even my girlfriend plays more now. They see me doing something and its "Hey I like that, can I watch too?" or "wow that game looks really fun, could I try?" "Hey, its 10am and you're drinking and playing Smash Brothers?..... Can I join?"

I've never heard that on PC.

I'm glad that the stereotype of what "gaming" used to be is going away, because people have been missing out. I'll gladly setup my next xbox, nintendo, and/or playstation as my media center. It's just getting easier and easier.

Besides, the gap between the two platforms is closing and being bridged. I'm already seeing some of that with Windows 8, but even excluding Microsoft, there is no reason that the next generation of consoles can't integrate more with a traditional computer.
