I used to draw a lot in high school and college, but like other things, stopped and let myself believe I couldn't do it. Recently I've felt like I wanted to do some concept art for the stories I write (no one wants art submitted with stories, so this would really just be for me). What really convinced me to dive in was reading one of Richard Feynmann's books, where he talks about teaching himself to draw nudes. I'm no genius-level intellect and don't have his gifts, but still, I'm inspired. And making comical mistakes, so far. "Hmm, let's start with a sketch, I guess I'll use the pencil tool...." Uh. The pencil tool doesn't look like what I thought it would. "Hmm, maybe the pen tool...OH GOD WHAT'S IT DOING..." Yeah. It's bad. But I picked up the Missing Manual for Photoshop and several art books and I'm muddling through making sad little mannequin sketches. :) : The most helpful thing to do is to watch other people drawing and what kind : of process they have, what tools they use and how they use those tools to : get a result they're content with. You might have to scour the internet to : find videos of people drawing, but vimeo is usually a pretty good place to : start. : And another important thing, look at tons of Photoshop tutorials. There is : usually one or two helpful tips in every tutorial that will speed your : work process up by a small increment of time. All those small increments : of time build up though- so eventually something that would take you 8 : hours to do, now takes you 1-2 hours. And if you're looking to be a : professional artist, time is such a HUGE factor in getting a job. They : don't really care what you can do if it takes you 8 hours to do- that's : like almost a full workday just for one piece of art. People don't have : that time to waste. Thanks for the advice. This is just a hobby for me, but I'm trying to understand what real artists use in their process.
