In Response To: Master Chief as a character *Long* (Ibeechu)

: Cliffs: - The Chief, until the end of Halo 3, could never really make a bad
: choice. His choices were always either made for him, or they were the most
: logical which doesn't really make them a choice.
: - The Reclaimer Trilogy, I hope, will have a lot to do with the Master Chief,
: the robot, maturing into John, the human.
: - For the first time, he's going to make mistakes. He's going to make bad
: choices. And he's going to have to be responsible for them.
: - What, why, and how he chooses, and what/why/how responds to his choices
: will be far more interesting and meaningful to his character than all of
: the backstory in the world.

Interesting topic, I guess I never thought of Halo 4 that way. I would be impressed if 343 were actually considering the implications of some of the topics you raised rather than just plowing ahead with whatever their idea of the Chief is.

Obviously we don't know a whole lot about the story other than it's more Chief and Cortana with some new bad guys, but fiction-wise, the Chief hasn't ever really been as potentially disconnected from humanity as he is now (assuming whatever Forerunner-like object picks him up isn't human). At the very least, he's always had a mission from humanity to guide him, or Cortana there to shine light on the way forward (sometimes literally), and now he arguably doesn't have any of that. Cortana could be a hindrance with her potential rampancy, and he really doesn't have any UNSC/humanity-based mission now outside of simply surviving and attempting to reconnect with the rest of mankind.
So like you point out, how does he deal with the open endedness of his situation? How would a Spartan-II deal with it, and how would John the person deal with it?

I'm afraid of what 343 will come up with, but if the people in charge of the story for Halo 4 actually care a little about canonical consistency, it'll behoove them to think about some of this going forward.
