In Response To: Re: DONE (elrolio) : I'd love to hear your thoughts on her style versus Nylund's - this didnt have : much in the way of space tactics and more in the way of space politics -- : obviously. But did I sense differences in Halsey's character, or is that : just my love of her as my fave character getting in the way? The book : seemed highly emotionally charged (again something I could accept as a red : thread in the series as being due to the release of tensions post war) as : well, especially with the scarred up ODST playing the role of super angry : at teh system guy. Trying to make the reader understand why war crimes are : bad and all that. I'm saying - I was always good with the abduction of the : kids, knowing that even without hindsight (winning war) it seemed to be : the tough but right choice. needs of the many and all that :P Halsey has long been my favorite character in the Halo universe as well. Initially it was because she was the scientist and the scientists in stories always end up discussing the aspects of the universe that I'm most interested in. But as her story grew with each addition to the Halo novels, her complexity grew more and more, and she became a really troubled, complex character. Off topic a bit, but that's probably part of why I like Cortana as well, because she inherited a lot of that complexity form Halsey.
This one handled it much more realistically and practically. Excuses weren't made for there to be combat scenes. Combat was only inserted into the book when it was necessary for the plot. The whole Jackals encounter... PURE GENIUS. I absolute loved that. It felt real, gritty, and 100% accurate to both the humans and the Jackals, especially between these two relatively neutral factions in a post-war universe. I think, overall, Traviss' style is much better suited to Halo than Nylund's, and if that's too heretical to say, than I'll reduce it to just Traviss is a much better fit for the post-war universe than Nylund would have been. Her approach allows the reader to get inside the heads of so many people, and really explore these characters from an emotional standpoint which - from my perspective - is half of Halo anyway. She may need to change her approach to a few minor details, but as far as style is concerned, I think she's nailed it.
