Gamestop. Not quite what I thought it'd be. Thought it'd be retail, but you're basically a salesman. Your hours and even your employment status (yes, dey'll terk er jerb!) are determined by your pre-order and Powerup/GI numbers. It wouldn't be so bad if the numbers were more reasonable, say 10% for pre-orders vs. the actual 20-25%. Considering that most of the customers are soccer moms and old people buying Wii and DS games for their kids and grandkids and NOT core gamers like myself, 20% is a hard number to hit unless you're the kind of person who can sell ice to an Eskimo. The vast majority of customers aren't interested in pre-ordering anything, and silver Powerup cards are the kind of thing that reaches market saturation; almost everyone that wants one has one, so most GI subs come from renewals (you can usually convince those who don't to get the free black card, but some don't even want that because they don't shop there enough to bother with one; oh, and the black cards don't count towards your numbers). Most pre-orders come from people who came in with the express purpose of pre-ordering or at least planned to or thought of pre-ordering a particular title at some point, and not from convincing casual customers to pre-order. Oh, and if someone comes to your register and cancels a pre-order it counts against you.

So, if you ever wanted to know why Gamestop employees try to push pre-orders and GI subs/Powerup cards on you every time you go there, now you know. Their hours, indeed their very job ("DURK ER DERR!") depends on getting at least one out of every five people to pre-order something, and at least one out of every ten to get GI subscription. Neither I nor anyone I know who's had retail experience thinks that Gamestop's hardcore emphasis on those numbers makes a bit of sense.

But, it's a job, and since it's typically easier to find a job when you have one, maybe I can get something else soon. Maybe my old job at Walmart. At least there were no arbitrary numbers there and the hours were steady.
