I can't agree to that. Part of the reason H:CE is my favorite in the series is because it works as a stand alone game. It has three tightly written acts that tell a self-enclosed story.

While the events on Alpha Halo are only part of a larger tale, what you learn about the outside universe is only picked up piecemeal from subtext. I like that.

The fan backlash from Halo 2 was mostly because it felt like Act 3 got cut off. Meanwhile, so little happens during Halo 3's plot that almost the entire game could be passed off as the missing act from the previous game.

While I might like to incorporate some shout outs to the events of H:R, Master Chief didn't know anybody from Noble Team. (Except for Jorge, arguably, but then I consider what happened to Linda in Fall of Reach to be far more relevant to John's characterization.)
