In Response To: Re: Microsoft: "MUST. MILK. FRANCHISE!" (Anton P. Nym (aka Steve)) : Another way to do it would be getting episodic content; smaller bites : released more often. Valve's attempt to serialise Half Life was a step : towards this; so far as I can tell the only reason it didn't work out is : that they deviated from the original plan to leave the engine alone and : just work on content. If 343 standardises on the Reach engine and then has : studios working on new content for it you could see a higher rate of : release. Content is still time consuming to do and create. Remember that while a game is in development, the engine and content are being worked on concurrently. It's not like the artists are twiddling their thumbs waiting for the engine to completely finish before they make content. I could easily believe that all the content in Reach: The levels, the backgrounds, the texturing, the modeling, the sounds, the voice recording, the foley, the music, the scripting, and the cinematics could easily have taken years to complete. You have to do these every time, even if you have an engine already built. See, on television they shoot a bunch of episodes at once, then have a ton of people each working on different ones. They aren't making a new show every week: they've got many episodes in the pipeline at the same time. You finish half your season, then while that is airing you finish the other half. Even on daily soaps, actors will shoot 2 or 3 episodes a day. The idea that you can have one group of people turning out games episodically is just silly, unless: You have multiple teams working at once, or you create all the episodes at once, THEN release them in a staggered manner.
