I have no problem with this per se. Even Bungie acknowledged that one huge release every three years was getting too risky (in the Halo 3 release podcast)... so it makes sense that 343i would come to the same conclusion. This does not have to be at the expense of quality.

343 could, as it did with other stuff, get together with multiple studios to have projects worked on in parallel... that way there's no extra time pressure but twice (or three times, or however many studios they get working on Halo stuff) the frequency of release. A variation on this would be what Wideload did; maintain a core creative and development team then contract out for the assets.

Another way to do it would be getting episodic content; smaller bites released more often. Valve's attempt to serialise Half Life was a step towards this; so far as I can tell the only reason it didn't work out is that they deviated from the original plan to leave the engine alone and just work on content. If 343 standardises on the Reach engine and then has studios working on new content for it you could see a higher rate of release.

If this erodes into quality I'll have a problem with this. And if I do have any concerns about a future Halo product, I won't buy it. But it's far too early to decide.

-- Steve's willing to judge by the results.
