Archiving over USB | |

In Response To: A programmer's perspective (Xorian) : There are USB devices you can buy which will allow you to read and write the : Xbox 360 memory units from a PC. I've been using one of those for a while : to archive Halo 3 content so that I can go past the "100 custom : content items" limit. (I have a lot of saved films, film clips, and : screenshots.) I was asked privately about where one can find such a USB device. The one I've been using is marketed as the Xbox 360 Transfer Kit. It has worked like a charm for me. I've used it to archive literally months and months of every single saved film from a LAN group I play with once a week. I believe the kit was originally intended to help people migrate saved game data from their original Xbox to their Xbox 360. A few things I've learned about using it with Halo 3: - If you put in a memory unit, Halo 3 will prompt you for where you want to save data such as screenshots, saved films, and film clips. I usually pop in the memory unit and then save films out of my recent films list directly to the memory unit. I then use the memory unit as I make film clips and screenshots from the the whole films, so I keep a whole group of data (e.g. one LAN game session) on the memory unit. - You can transfer Halo 3 data like saved films to and from a memory unit from the dashboard using the memory/storage browser in the far right system/console blade. (Sorry, I don't have a 360 in front of me so I'm being a little vague.) It can be a bit annoying as you have to copy/move them one at a time but it works. - I don't think you can copy Halo 3 saved films, forged maps, etc. onto a memory unit, give it to a friend, and then have them copy the files onto their 360's hard drive. I believe the files are tied to a particular profile. - The filenames you see in the dashboard file browser are determined when you first save the file. If you later re-name an object, the name you see in the dashboard doesn't change. Unfortunately this means that when you save a film from recent films, you wind up with names that aren't helpful in locating the one you want. However, if you rename a film, upload it to your file share, and download it again the name in the dashboard file browser will be the actual name that you set before uploading it.
