1. I didn't think it was a hologram. I assumed it was just city type structures on the planet that were built in patterns that mimicked the Forerunner glyphs seen on the Halos, etc. Like on that Forerunner-type world at the end of the Legendary cutscene, there are structures so large the symbols and emblems can be seen from orbit. You can tell where Japan and the eastern seaboard of the US are on nighttime photos of the Earth, just due to the light output. You can identify individual cities because of the amount of light and shape and location. The Forerunner must've built structures that look very different from ground level than they appear when seen from overhead. 2. The Dreadnought must've 'parked' underground. Miranda assumes it went at least to the surface since she couldn't detect it in orbit, and the first Prophet of Truth hologram tells the Covenant it has gone underground. 3. It's very likely from what we've seen of the Halos that the Ark's underside is probably the same. The Cartographer hologram doesn't give that away, and there's no shots we ever see in that area, so it's guesswork and speculation.
