This seems odd to me... | |

In Response To: WWU up!? (Psychophan7) Bungie (with Halo) pretty much made Microsoft's console gaming enterprise work. The just created a game that enjoyed the most successful launch of any game ever. And then, just two weeks later, Microsoft lets them go. And they weren't even being investigated for perjury. I say that because in a lot of ways (and this is just a very shallow, uninformed initial reaction) this reminds me of Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants. Bonds made the Giants one of the most successful (in terms of selling tickets) franchises since 2000. He brought people to the park which he basically built himself (in the way that Ruth built Yankee stadium) and he made the Giants a lot of money. But then, right after breaking the all-time home run record, they let him go, even though he can still perform, and even though he can still draw lots of fans. Now, obviously there are big big big differences between these two situations (Bungie is not reviled or old and past their prime), but on a very simple level, they strike me as somewhat similar. It's almost like Microsoft was just waiting for Bungie to knock out Halo 3 before letting them go, kinda like how the Giants were waiting (and it was a long wait) for Barry to hit 756. The Giants have been Barry Bonds and little else for the last seven (if not 15) years, just as Xbox has been dominated by Halo for its entire existence. I've got a feeling that Microsoft wanted to get what it knew it could get out of Bungie (that's why they bought them in the first place after all) but didn't want Halo (or Bungie) to end up defining the xbox. Of course, that interpretation short-changes Bungie in a lot of ways as I'm sure Bungie will enjoy their independence (Bond's, on the other hand, didn't have a say in all this and in any case wanted to stay with San Francisco). But at the same time, there's gotta be something to be said for having the largest software developer in the world behind you when you're making your dream game. I mean, could Halo 3 have been made without the resources that Microsoft brought to the table? (I honestly don't know, I don't know much about video game developing) I don't know, I'm sure I'm way off here. This just popped into my head so I figured I'd type it out.
