I thought the only thing the hex edit revealed was initially that (1) the skull was on The Covenant. Later they did find that it was close to code for the ring holograms, but that was nearly 2 days (IIRC) after various people had begun transcribing the hologram's notes and trying different things with them (Jumping through them to play various songs; shooting through them in certain orders, etc).
