From what I read in a thread on HIH, the rings that you jump through when numbered 1 to 7 correspond to the musical notes of the main Halo theme
The sequence is: 4 5 6 5 7 6 5 4 1 2 3 2 7 2 1 3 4 6 7 5 4 6 5 4 5 3 4
The notes they correspond to are: E F# G F# A G F# E B C# D C# A C# B D E G A F# E G F# E F# D E
It was apparently discovered by someone on the Halo planet forums by hex editing - which I don't think is really fair, as many have said: it's supposed to be a challenge.
The 'why' part? Just because you can I suppose, and to make something exceedingly hard to figure out in order to get a skull.
If there is a prize, I don't think I deserve it because I'm just copying and pasting stuff.
