Not half of humanity's last : stand and half of an elite grudge story... I personally enjoyed the covenants side of the story in halo 2. It helped explain a ton about them, and elites are my favorite allies compared to the whiny marines the cheif gets. I would actually like to see a whole book written from the covenants side of the story, just to learn more about them.
