In Response To: New Blomkaamp Short! (Avateur) I loved the first short. It captured Halo really well. This second one... ehh, not so much. 1) The over-the-top shaky-cam. I don't know why so many directors go to that style of directing. An example right off the top of my head is the second and third Saw movies. Leigh Whannel's writing was phenomenal, but I loathed the directing. In EVERY scene, even when nothing is really going on onscreen, the camera is figeting. It's the same type of directing as in a lot of those commercials where they have the bad actors look to the right or left of the camera to make it look like they're actually being interviewed, and the camera jerks around and zooms in and out to give it a feel of realism. It's not realism; it's dumbtardism. But I digress. I just equate Halo with smooth camera movements. I don't think I can remember a cutscene where the camera shakes that much. 2) The colors. or rather, the lack thereof. I watched DocOctavius' color corrected version hoping to see some more color, but it's still all gray and muted. It's more like Killzone- or even Gears-style. Bungie has said that they don't want to do Gears' style. It works for that game, but Halo has its own style. Vibrant colors, great contrasting, etc. I guess Blomkamp was going for a "bleak" feel, but let us not forget "Day at the Beach." 3) The weird text and things. Mostly the overhead shots with the motion tracking boxes or whatever. I didn't mind the first-person text, because it reminds me of Jenkins' log from Halo: CE, and I thought it was a nice reference (even if unintentional (which it probably was)). But it's simply not Halo. There's never been a cutscene (going back to cutscenes, again) where this kind of thing was done. I'm open to new elements of directing in the Haloverse, but I'd like Bungie to stick with the tried and true Staten/Lehto formula. Now, before you ask, "What? Do you just want the shorts to be live-action versions of cutscenes?" Basically, yes. There is so much potential here, but it's being watered down by cliches. The muted colors are my biggest pet peeve. Also, let us not forget "A Day at the Beach" which rawked in my opinion. And it didn't need to use the Camera-Attached-To-A-Weasel-Ball effect, the muted colors, or the use of arbitrary text. Day at the Beach was what I had hoped these shorts were going to be, albeit live action and with different content, of course. But now, it's more like, If Halo Were Gears: The Movie. Meh, just one opinion from a crazy Japanese kid.
