Anyone remember the E3 2004 multiplayer video? http://halo.bungie.org/misc/e32004contentmirrors.html (I got mine from Game Informer). This video was released to us six months before Halo 2 was released, and we can't be that much more time away from Halo 3. So I thought I'd bring it to everyone's attention and have a little look at it and compare it to the finished game. There's no beating around the bush - it looks near identical to the finished version of Zanzibar. The only differences I personally see are item placements. The rockets spawn in a different place above the courtyard (closer to the base), and there are fusion cores in front of the gate. These things are nothing to do with the graphics/textures/triplemultiplerazzmatazzbloomeffektz. The graphics I see in this video are the graphics I see when I load up my retail copy of Halo 2. So can we expect to see any improvements over the leaked video from yesterday? Well, yes and no. While the Zanzibar in this E3 vid looks identical to it's retail counterpart, it's obvious that a lot of things still have to be fine tuned and tweaked. As mentioned earlier, weapon spawns an fusion cores come to mind, but also you can clearly see that the physics are different. That warthog flipped around more than it does in the finished game, and Max ("Wort") goes flying after he's sword lunged. The warthog appears to take a lot more punishment than in retail, and it shoots reockets as opposed to gauss rounds. The rocket launcher lock-on isn't perfected, damage to vehicles doesn't affect their handling in the retail version, etc etc. Having said that, what naysayers have to keep in mind is that this Halo 2 footage was prepped for E3 much like the Beta is being prepped. It was lovingly crafted and created for a single purpose; tested and perfected. The leaked beta stuff wasn't prepared to be shown. It will have rough edges that wouldn't be acceptable for an E3 demonstration. And we also don't know how old the beta footage is, though I'd guess it's fairly recent (Why would you wait to release such a thing?). All in all, my personal opinion is that while the graphics in the game don't look as bad as the critics say, I don't think they'll be improved as much as those defending the video suggest. I was really impressed with the visuals, they're easily some of the best I've seen the 360 do so far. However, I wouldn't say they beat Gears of War, and I feel that they should be better for what Halo 3 is. It's freakin' Halo 3, after all! Ultimately though, it doesn't bother me that much. No matter how good H3's graphics will be it's gameplay that matters most, and it looks set to have that in droves.
