Cross platform... Uh-oh Console vs PC rant

In Response To: Halo 2 Xbox and Windows Vista (Schedonnardus) Even if H2 doesn't play cross platform this gets me thinking Halo 3 WILL be cross platform. Now that is a great feature but it also makes me worry. I would love play H2 or H3 with a few PC gamer friends. I am also competitive and if the general pool of people in matchmaking is made up of both PC players and console players I'll never feel like I am able to accurately gauge my skill against the general population of matchmaking players. I am not a rank whore, I couldn't care less about that number next to my name. I do like to see it, but I don't care what it says really. I do like to win a few games and I like to know that the playing field is level. One thing I like about online console gaming vs online pc gaming is that on a console I know that everyone is playing with the same graphics card, same RAM, and the same controller. If that all changes and I am going to be playing against PC owners who may have faster machines and better control systems I'll feel like some part of the console gaming fun will be lost. I like the console because it's a purchase it and forget it system. With a PC sometimes you have to upgrade to be competitive, and I don't enjoy having to worry about that. So if cross platform is an option and not the standard for all games I'm all for it. If it becomes one big melting pot and PC and console players are playing against each other as the standard I am disappointed.
