I believe that game developers can decide where they want the notifications to go. In some games, I don't remember which ones exactly, it is on the top of the screen.
I think the best place to put the HUD pieces would be on the bottom right, since the gun is already blocking that area of the screen. But then you can't see the beautiful First Person gun...
