Well I have an idea about the grenade chasing. Could it be because elites (and other covies) look at grenades when they are thrown, so they can get out of the way? It's possible the computer controls the banshee just like the player, and by having the elite pilot looking at the grenade, the banshee follows the direction he is looking, like when you point your camera in the direction you want the 'shee to go.
