Put simply - it's using the best parts for the scenario you're being put in... if it's a long-range game - use a sniper to get people when they aren't expecting - then have the pistol for backup if somebody notices you...
Short-range game - use a smaller barrel - think of it this way - would you rather use a sniper rifle or an SMG-like weapon if you're playing in a close-range game? The shorter barrel is better for this scenario.
It's all about having the right gear for the right scenario. ;)
No, I have no paintball experience - but a lot of GreyThor's post was about strategy and scenarios... which is why I could understand it.
